With actress Chlo Grace Moretz pulling the plug on her plan to star in Universal Studios’ live-action adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s classic tale, “The Little Mermaid,” speculations on who could replace her begins to circulate in the rumor mill.
After recently filming “Brain on Fire” and “November Criminals” back-to-back, Moretz told The Hollywood Reporter, “So I pulled the plug on all my movies because I want to reassess who I am and find myself within my roles again. I’m realizing that I can slow down.”
The actress will instead focus on producing and is also currently working on two TV shows she hopes to shop around to networks soon.
Talking separately to E! News, the 19-year-old star clarified that she is not taking a hiatus from acting but she just wants to be more particular about her chosen roles. With around 55 films already under her belt, she explained that she is “becoming more picky.”
She added that actors have a huge opportunity to find themselves through the projects they select and what the industry really means for them. “Why not sit back, slow down, realize I’m 19 and go, ‘Hey, let’s make stuff that really, really hits hard with who I am and helps me figure out what it means to be a 19-year-old actor who is just doing her thing,'” she continued.
With the role of Ariel in “The Little Mermaid” up for grabs, some fans suggest that Moretz could be replaced by another notable young actress.
The names that have popped up include Ella Purnell who recently appeared as the charming Emma Bloom in Tim Burton’s “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children,” “True Detective” alum Alexandra Daddario, or even the pop star Ariana Grande who had a striking resemblance to the protagonist when she dyed her hair red in Nickelodeon’s “Victorious.”
When it comes to physical attributes and vocal prowess, Karen Gillian and acclaimed actress Emma Stone are also deemed to fit the part. However, since there is no official announcement yet from the producers, it remains to be seen who will be cast in the lead role.
