'Law & Order: SVU' season 18 spoilers, news: Donald Trump-inspired episode on hold until after presidential election

“Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” is pulling from the headlines once again as it released a brand new teaser for an upcoming episode titled “Unstoppable.” The episode, inspired by Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, features Gary Cole as a politician whose campaign goes wrong as several women go public with damaging accusations. The episode was originally slated to air on Oct. 26, but it was recently confirmed that the NBC show has put the episode on hold.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the network has pulled the episode and won’t be airing it until sometime after the presidential election on Nov. 8. No statement has been given regarding the episode’s postponed air date.

In Futon Critic’s “SVU” listing, it can be seen that “Unstoppable” was originally scheduled to air on Oct. 26, but the episode has been crossed out. According to the listing, episode 6 titled “Rape Interrupted” will air in its place.

In the promo for the Trump-inspired episode, Cole’s character confidently tells Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) that he is a “handsome, charming millionaire and women throw themselves at me.” Viewers have found similarities with the character’s lines to Trump’s leaked statements about women.

The episode was announced in the midst of some difficult weeks for the Trump campaign. Last week, The Washington Post posted an “Access Hollywood” video from 2005 in which Trump talked about groping women with co-host Billy Bush. Trump has since apologized for what he said in the video, referring to it as “locker room talk.”

TMZ notes that the timing to pull the episode is interesting, as sources connected to NBC told the media outlet that the “Access Hollywood” video was supposed to air two days before the first debate. However, “Access Hollywood” executives were allegedly concerned that the revelation wouldn’t have a strong impact on viewers due to Hurricane Matthew coverage, so the show reportedly postponed the airing, leading the person with the tape to leak it to the Washington Post instead.

“Law and Order: SVU” airs Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET on NBC.
