'Law and Order: SVU' season 17, episode 16 spoilers: fans divided over Benson's new man

Last episode, long time running “Law and Order: SVU” season 17 dropped a major bomb in the show as Sgt. Olivia Benson’s (Mariska Hargitay) mystery man was revealed. It turned out that Benson has been having a secret love affair with Internal Affairs Bureau Captain, Ed Tucker (Robert John Burke).

This came as a big surprise for loyal followers of the police procedural despite the numerous hints that the show has been plotting this season including that time when Benson was popping the cork of a wine bottle while talking to someone on the phone.

Over the course of the season 17b, Tucker has also been significant in solving recent crimes especially during the “Townhouse Incident” episode when Benson called him as somebody she trusted. The reveal was done in a subtle way during the end of “Collateral Damage” when Benson suddenly linked arms with Tucker, while looking for a place to drink.

While the character has been popping in and out of the show since 2002, the viewing public is still torn over Benson’s new love interest with some fans saying that the partnership does not make sense, and they are still hoping for a Benson and Elliot Stabler (Chris Meloni) reunion. As previously reported, there is still a possibility that Meloni might come back in the show if NBC and the production truly wants him to reprise his role as Benson’s longtime partner. Others, on the other hand, think that Tucker is a good partner for Benson, who is now a single mother, given their history together.

While the Internet is divided over Benson’s love life, Amanda Rollins (Kelli Giddish) will be back on full action after her maternity leave. After going undercover, she will be playing a major role in the show’s next episode titled “Star-Struck Victims.” According to the official synopsis posted by The Futon Critic, Rollins will be taking matters into her own hands when Asst. District Attorney Rafael Barba (Raul Esparza) is forced to drop rape charges against a popular actor.
