The withstanding silence of Marvel Studios in regard the fate of the “Iron Man” franchise has not necessarily stopped fans from speculating on what could be Robert Downey Jr.’s (RDJ) swan song for his iconic character, Tony Stark.
Until now, the comic book company is still tight-lipped about the prospect of an “Iron Man 4,” although many industry insiders believe that the project is no longer concerned with pushing through but rather when it will push through.
At first, Jon Favreau’s long-awaited comeback in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was tipped to be a sign that the movie will now come to fruition given the director’s reunion with RDJ. However, outside of reprising his role as Happy Hogan in the forthcoming Tom Holland starrer, “Spider-Man: Homecoming” and as executive producer for “Avengers: Infinity War,” no other word regarding a Tony Stark standalone has been mentioned.
To complicate things further, both the actor and the filmmaker are supposedly filling out their schedules in the next couple of months up until at least a year. RDJ is set to return to Atlanta to start the back-to-back filming of “Infinity War” and the yet to be titled “Avengers 4.” He is also rumored to make his small screen comeback via a “Perry Mason” reboot with HBO and “True Detective” creator Nic Pizzolatto.
Favreau, on the other hand, is lined up for Disney’s live-action remake of 1994’s “The Lion King.” The new flick is said to have been fast-tracked coming on the heels of the success of this year’s “The Jungle Book” which was also helmed by the 49-year-old. Currently, both actors are filming “Homecoming” wherein Stark is said to be playing a prominent role.
Marvel Studios may not also be too keen in rushing “Iron Man 4” into production given that their timeline is pretty much packed, at least until 2019. In 2020, however, three unnamed films have already been scheduled by the production house and one of those could very well be RDJ’s last hurrah as the red-and-gold-suit-wearing superhero.
Meanwhile, for fans who are itching for their regular dose of Tony Stark, the character is by no means having scarcity in story development in the pages of comic books with the introduction of Riri Williams and the revelation of his true lineage.
For the time being, fans can see RDJ in “Spider-Man: Homecoming” which will be out on July 7, 2017, and “Avengers: Infinity War” which will be released on May 4, 2018.
