'Independence Day: Resurgence' trailer, cast, release date: Human race facing much bigger threat

It’s been almost two decades since aliens invaded Earth and now, it’s just months away before they make an attempt for the second time. With the upcoming release of “Independence Day: Resurgence,” the sequel to the original sci-fi film “Independence Day,” 20th Century Fox has released a trailer to give moviegoers a glimpse into the devastation that is about to come.

Even back in June, director Roland Emmerich already shared several set photos to excite fans on the upcoming film. One is a photo of a mean machine called the Moon Tug, which was apparently developed by humans after harnessing the alien technology that came from the remains of the first alien invaders. This will surely give some headache to the aliens who plans to invade Earth.

Emmerich has posted on Twitter several more images from the set of the upcoming film, including a life-size Alien Attacker, and of the cast members

Some of the original cast from the first movie will be back in the sequel, including Jeff Goldblum as computer expert David Levinson; Judd Hirsch as Julius Levinson; Bill Pullman now as the former president of the United States; Vivica A. Fox as Jasmine Dubrow-Hiller; and some few more familiar faces coming from the first movie.

Unfortunately, Will Smith, who played Capt. Steven Hiller, the main protagonist in the first “Independence Day,” is not part of the new film. Emmerich said in an interview with Cinemablend a few months ago, “In the very beginning, I wanted to work with him and he was excited to be in it but then after a while he was tired of sequels, and he did another science fiction film, which was his father-son story, so he opted out.”

Nonetheless, Capt. Hiller’s step-son, Dylan Dubrow-Hiller, will be in the movie as the new lead role which will be played by Jessie Usher, along with Liam Hemsworth as Jake Morrison.

“Independence Day: Resurgence” is scheduled to hit the big screen on July 24, 2016.
