Before the release of “Independence Day: Resurgence” on June 24, 2016, a prequel comic book will be published by Titan Comics first. Also, director Roland Emmerich says that the movie will have an expanded and more complicated universe.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the still untitled comic book will focus on a dark, rich, and psychological prison drama. Editor Steve White told THR, “It will be a golden opportunity to segue nicely into next year’s blockbuster sequel by taking the mythos of the original and maybe adding a little darkness to it.”
Although no release date has been announced for the prequel book, it will be added to Titan’s long line of series-based publications. Some of the comic books already introduced by the company are based on Sony’s The Blacklist, BBC’s Doctor Who, NBC’s Heroes, and the video game Assassin’s Creed.
Meanwhile, Collider reported that “Independence Day: Resurgence” will have a bigger universe unlike the simple storyline of the first movie. In an interview with the film’s director Roland Emmerich, he said that the movie will focus on what the people did when they found out that the hives or aliens were coming back to Earth.
“They travel from planet to planet, their whole civilization. We had 20 years to come together as a planet and to build incredible things to have a little more even fight,” Emmerich divulged.
Asked about how many aliens were actually killed in the 1996 film, the director just said that what was destroyed was only one of the hives that have been moving around.
As reported by Slash Film, the aliens managed to send a distress signal before they were defeated in the first movie, thus sending more towards the human race.
The film wrapped up production a month ago. It will star Liam Hemsworth, Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Vivica A. Fox, and Maika Monroe.
