The first trailer for “Independence Day: Resurgence,” the most awaited sequel to the alien invasion sci-fi action film “Independence Day,” has been released. Bad news is that actor Will Smith is nowhere to be found, but good news is other familiar faces are.

Twenty years after an alien race attacked Earth and invasion plots were foiled by the efforts of the human race, the hostile extraterrestrial species is coming back to the planet with a vengance. 20th Century Fox gives a synopsis along with the trailer to part two of the movie. The story is as follows:

“The next epic chapter delivers global spectacle on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.”

Although Smith will not be appearing in the film, some of the original cast members will be. Jeff Goldblum will be returning as David Levinson, who has now become the chief of a department called “Earth Space Defense.” Bill Pullman also returns as ex-president Thomas J. Whitmore, and the trailer repeats his famous speech, saying, “We will not go quietly into the night!” as he joins pilots in a final attack on the alien invaders.

A notable plot detail to the story is the upgrading of the weaponry of the human race, as Levinson states that they have “learned” from what may have been debris and remnants of alien technology. However, the trailer also shows an invading force that goes beyond what Earth saw in the first attack.

Joining the movie are new cast members as well. “The Hunger Games” star Liam Hemsworth joins the lineup as a fighter jet pilot, most probably as a replacement for Smith’s heavy-duty die-hard soldier character, Captain Steve Hiller. Other stars joining the film include Judd Hirsch, Vivica A. Fox, Brent Spiner and Charlotte Gainsbourg.

“Independence Day: Resurgence” is set to premiere on June 24, 2016.
