Alongside with “Hawaii Five-0’s” monumental 150th episode was the closing of a chapter in Steve McGarrett’s (Alex O’Loughlin) life that had been left hanging for quite a long time.
Last week’s installment called “Ka makuahine a me ke keikikane (Mother and Son)” not only reunited the lieutenant commander with his mom, Doris (Christine Lahti), after she was captured by the CIA and was held at a black site, it also provided Steve a shocking face-to-face encounter with his almost fiance, Catherine (Michelle Broth) who actually delivered the bad news to him.
After everything had been taken care of, Catherine and Steve had long overdue heart-to-heart conversation which addressed their past relationship that ended abruptly after the former ghosted on the latter at the start of season 6. In the final moments of the episode, just before she took off for a new assignment, Catherine said that she indeed knew that Steve was on the brink of proposing and even admitted that she would have said “yes.” Needless to say, the covert agent also pointed out that despite what happened in the past, she is now happy working for the CIA.
“I think it’s over. He’s moved on. At a certain point, with any man or woman, if you go through enough with one person, you get to a point where you’re like, ‘Look, I love you, and I’ll always love you, but I’m not taking those risks again. I did that, I was there, I sat by, I waited for a long time,'” O’Loughlin told Entertainment Weekly on what Catherine’s explanation means to his character. “There’s closure. Whenever we have closure, we get to move on with and take our best self with us. There’s no, ‘Will I see her again? Will I hear from her again? Where did she go?’ He knows now.”
Moving forward, in this week’s episode titled “Hana Komo Pae (Rite of Passage),” McGarrett takes a breather with Danno (Scott Caan) taking center stage as he chaperones Grace’s (Teilor Grubbs) winter formal. Unfortunately, terrorists attack the event in the hopes of kidnapping a diplomat’s son thus putting the detective sergeant in a shotgun mission.
“Hawaii Five-0” season 7 airs every Friday, 9 p.m. ET on CBS.
