'Half-Life 3' release date rumors: Move to new office may give Valve space to work on new game

Fans of “Half-Life” have been waiting for almost a decade for the third installment of the first-person shooter video game franchise. In spite of the wait, fans continue to hold on to the belief that Valve will eventually develop the game.

There may be some good news for those who are waiting. Video game developer Valve recently announced that they will move to a new building with a wider office space in May 2017. They reportedly need more space in order to hire more people to help with their projects.

Even though Valve did not reveal the names of the projects, there are speculations that “Half-Life 3” is one of them. There are also reports saying that the game may be released in 2018 just in time for the “Half Life” franchise’s 20th anniversary.

While the lack of office space may have stalled the development of “Half-Life 3,” a more likely reason is that Valve simply decided not to develop the game.

In a podcast posted by Geoff Keighley last year, Valve co-founder Gabe Newell and the company’s development lead Erik Johnson spoke about what Valve had been doing and briefly touched on the subject of “Half-Life 3.” Newell said:

“The only reason we’d go back and do like a super classic kind of product is if a whole bunch of people just internally at Valve said they wanted to do it and had a reasonable explanation for why. But you know if you want to do another Half-Life game and you want to ignore everything we’ve learned in shipping Portal 2 and in shipping all the updates on the multiplayer side, that seems like a bad choice. So we’ll keep moving forward. But that doesn’t necessarily always mean what people are worried that it might mean.”

The franchise has a very loyal fan base. It even has its own subreddit with more than 28,000 subscribers. Gamers who have grown tired of waiting say that Valve can’t count to three. This is in reference to Valve’s failure to develop third installments in many of their popular video game franchises like “Left 4 Dead,” “Portal,” and of course, “Half-Life.” It has been a popular joke in the gaming world for years.

At this point in time, there is still no official news or update about “Half-Life 3.”
