'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2' update: Director reveals that another guardian was almost added to the film

Thanks to a concept art posted on Facebook by “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” director James Gunn a month ago, fans got a sneak preview of the characters who are going to be in the sequel.

On the concept art, fans got to see the fab five: Star-Lord/Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista), Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel), and Rocket Raccoon (Voiced by Bradley Cooper). Yondu Udonta (Michael Rooker) and Nebula (Karen Gillan) were there with the heroes, and so was Mantis (Pom Klementieff), a new member of the Guardians with empathic powers.

During a question and answer session on his Facebook account, Gunn revealed that he almost added another member to the team at one point in the script, but he had to remove the character because the film was getting overcrowded. Gunn said that the choice was between the character and Mantis, and he chose the latter.

“Yes. In my initial treatment I had a whole other Guardian involved. I loved the character and loved including him/her, and thought my take was fun. But I started to feel that there were two many characters in the story and for all of the characters to get their due, I needed to remove one. So this character left, and Mantis stayed,” came Gunn’s reply to a fan’s question.

Gunn would not reveal the name of the character. However, there is always a chance that he/she may appear in a third movie.

Besides Mantis, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” will also introduce fans to Ayesha (Elizabeth Debicki), the High Priestess and leader of the Sovereign people, and Ego the Living Planet (Kurt Russel), an ancient cosmic being who is also Star-Lord’s father.

During the Facebook Q&A, Gunn was asked about the film’s trailer and he replied that fans will see the trailer “Not too long. Also not too soon.”

According to the Daily Mail, Benicio del Toro may also be making a cameo in “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” but nothing has been confirmed as of this moment.

“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” is scheduled to premiere on May 5, 2017.
