'GTA 6' release date, rumors: Sequel to arrive after 'Red Dead Redemption 2' either in 2018 or 2020

Rumors are rife that after Rockstar Games recently confirmed the sequel to the “Red Dead Redemption” franchise, the fan-favorite “Grand Theft Auto” series may also see the same treatment with the potential development of its sixth main installment.

According to reports, there is a big possibility that “Grand Theft Auto 6” may have been temporarily shelved since the game developer is focusing on “Red Dead Redemption 2.” It is believed that instead of the predicted 2018 launch after “RDR2’s” arrival in 2017, the release window might be moved to 2020.

However, iDigitalTimes noted that fans should not be too worried about the seeming overlap between the titles as the studio apparently has very large divisions for each of them. The news outlet shared that “RDR2” is the brainchild of Rockstar San Diego while “GTA 6” may be created over at Rockstar North similar to its predecessor, “Grand Theft Auto 5.” Since there are two entirely different branches of companies working on their own projects, the two games will not interfere with each other.

Moreover, there are other subsidiaries such as Rockstar Lincoln, Rockstar Leeds and Rockstar New England which reportedly work on support and ports and not on developing games.

Meanwhile, when it comes to the content, there are speculations that it is the right time for the game to have a female lead character. It can be recalled that in the previous iterations and the current online version, girls have been featured but never in a central role.

What may have added to the assumption that a woman may be introduced is the statement of Dan Houser, co-founder of Rockstar Games, back in 2013.

“In the future, could we do a game with a lead female character? Of course. We just haven’t found the right game for it yet, but it’s one of the things we always think about,” he said.

In addition, there may also be a new location which is more exotic compared to the others. As the majority of the cities in the game are part of the United States with the exemption of “Grand Theft Auto: London,” there are suggestions that different places around the globe may be included.

Since there is no official confirmation yet regarding the existence of “GTA 6,” available information should be taken with a grain of salt.
