The season 13 premiere of “Grey’s Anatomy” picked up after last season’s cliffhanger. Incidentally, it also ended in another squeaker with Alex (Justin Chambers) ending up behind bars after deciding to turn himself in willingly. As the story moves forward, a multitude of questions pop up regarding what could be a very precarious future for the veteran hospital member.
In the pilot roundup with Entertainment Weekly, the 46-year-old broke down his character’s current situation and provided insight as Alex tries “to pick up the pieces and try to glue it back together.” The risk of jail time as well as losing his medical license are already laid out with Andrew (Giacomo Gianniotti) almost losing his life due to Alex’s beating. But delving deeper into how he will try to fix his life and relationship with Jo (Camilla Luddington) will still prove to be motivation for him.
“Obviously, [he’s] going to find out why she can’t marry him. I don’t know where that takes them from there, but he’s hurt, and he’s angry, and he’s wrong, but he’s also right,” Chambers spilled, referring to what Alex is concocting in regard to Jo’s secret.
Shifting to the creative perspective, executive producer Shonda Rhimes confirmed that this is not something that Alex can just easily breeze through. In fact, the consequences of his actions will be fully executed one way or another.
“There are going to be some really big consequences. We talked about it a lot in the writer’s room, how we were going to deal with this, and what we thought made sense, and I really wanted to tell a story that felt true,” Rhimes said in a separate conversation with the media outlet.
However, the TV producer extraordinaire is by no means ignoring the tribulations of one of her remaining original cast members. She added, “He is a character who every single time he has become involved with a woman, that woman has, in some way, destroyed him. We are going to watch what happens for him now and how that challenges him and changes him.”
Next week’s episode may not entirely be a new day for Alex as spoilers suggest that even Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) will be reconsidering her affiliation with him. It can be remembered that borne out of her long-standing friendship with Alex, she decided to cover up for him and went to great lengths only to find him locked up due to his own decision. Elsewhere in the installment titled “Catastrophe and Cure,” Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) and Owen (Kevin McKidd) host a dinner while Jackson (Jesse Williams) offers a helping hand to April (Sarah Drew).
“Grey’s Anatomy” season 13 airs every Thursday, 8 p.m. ET on ABC
