“Grey’s Anatomy” has just released new artwork to tease what lies ahead for Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and the rest of the doctors at Grey Sloane Memorial Hospital in season 13.
The image, which was exclusively obtained by TVLine, shows half of Meredith’s face, with the right side of her face replaced by the Seattle skyline. The artwork does not have a tagline, compared to the past seasons’ promotional photos.
The artwork could mean that Meredith will be torn between two choices in season 13 to have a steady and romantic relationship with Nathan Riggs (Martin Henderson), who she had a fling with in season 12, or to stay single to keep Derek’s (Patrick Dempsey) memory alive.
In the season ender, it appeared as though Meredith and Nathan had the potential to be a romantic couple. The pair has not said anything to any of their co-workers about what happened between the two of them, but it is expected that their friends will know all about it in season 13. A potential romance between the two could be very complicated, because Meredith still cherishes the memory of her late husband.
Another complication that could hinder the MeredithNathan romance is the fact that her half-sister, Maggie (Kelly McCreary) has a big crush on Nathan. Moreover, Owen (Kevin McKidd), who already has a bad history with Nathan, could resent the new pairing due to his closeness and loyalty to Derek.
The reactions to the new coupling will be varied for sure, as series star Caterina Scorsone (Amelia) said that her character could find herself the middle-person between Maggie and Meredith, should the news about Nathan come out.
“Right now, Amelia doesn’t know about either of their situations with Riggs, so that will be something really fun to explore,” Scorsone told Entertainment Weekly.
When asked whether the sisters’ relationship will be affected by this, the actress said, “I don’t know that they’ll necessarily be at odds…It’s possible that they’ll both try and accommodate each other.”
“Grey’s Anatomy” season 13 premieres on Thursday, Sept. 22 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
