Grey's Anatomy season 12 news and spoilers: Jessica Capshaw extends contract until 2018; Martin Henderson replacing McDreamy?; Katherine Heigl confirms no return

Calzona fans may have their wish granted in bringing their favorite onscreen couple back on “Grey’s Anatomy,” as actress Jessica Capshaw recently signed a contract extension for the medical drama until May 2018.

TV Line exclusively shares that news and added that even though the series has only been officially renewed for season 12, ABC entertainment president Paul Lee stated last month that he would like to see it running for “many, many years to come.”

He added that in line with the series “Castle,” both shows are “powerful, vibrant brands with incredibly passionate audiences.”

Capshaw plays the character of Arizona Robbins, a prenatal surgeon married to Callie Torres. With the renewal of Capshaw’s contract, some reports claim that their relationship might be given more focus.

International Business Times also mentioned that although Callie has started dating again on season 11, Calzona shippers still hope that they would be back together at some point in the show especially that they still spend some time with each other as friends.

When it comes to other series regulars, Martin Henderson is confirmed to be added to the cast. Even if the network declines to comment on his specific role, some speculates that he might be the replacement for Patrick Dempsey’s character, Derek “McDreamy” Shepherd.

Jason George who portrays Dr. Ben Warren also took it to Twitter last month to announce that he has been promoted to appear to the show more often.

Meanwhile, actress Katherine Heigl who played Isobel “Izzie” Stevens on seasons one to five commented that it is hard to picture the show without McDreamy, “I just can’t imagine the show without McDreamy. It’s just so hard to picture,” she said to ET Online.

She also addressed the rumor suggesting that she might reprise her character on the show, when asked if there is any truth to it, the actress answered “There is not, I’m sorry.”

Season 12 is slated to premiere on September 24.
