The cast and producers of “Gotham” were at the San Diego Comic-Con over the weekend to preview what lies ahead for the third season of the FOX show, and apart from a new story arc, the upcoming season will also see some new developments stemming from the chaos that is about to take place in the city.
According to Comic Book Resources, executive producers Danny Cannon and John Stephens, along with series stars Ben Mackenzie (Jim Gordon), Morena Baccarin (Lee Thompkins), David Mazouz (Bruce Wayne), and Camren Bicondova (Selina Kyle), among others, were at the panel to kick things off with a sizzle reel and to answer some questions about the new season.
It was revealed that season 3 opens six months after the events of season 2, wherein Fish Mooney (Jada Pinkett Smith) unleashed Hugo Strange’s (BD Wong) monsters including a doppelganger for Bruce into the city.
“The monsters that have been unleashed on Gotham at the end of season 2 are turning the city into utter, total anarchy,” said Mackenzie, “and Jim Gordon is a bounty hunter, taking out the monsters and getting paid.”
As the chaos in Gotham escalates, this sets the stage for other developments in the series, which include the rise of the Court of Owls and Joker’s cult.
“We’re all building up to a place that needs Batman as a masked vigilante,” said Cannon. “Gotham is going to keep spiraling out of control otherwise, that masked vigilante won’t be necessary.”
The Court of Owls storyline is derived from the “Batman” comic books, but the FOX show will be putting their own spin on it. According to Collider, this will be a long arc over the season and that “Gotham” will be putting a face on the mysterious group, and viewers will see the people inside of it who have influence in the world on the show.
Meanwhile, Bruce, Alfred (Sean Pertwee), and Lucius (Chris Chalk) will have to deal with the arrival of Bruce’s doppelganger, and Stephens revealed that the other Bruce was created for a reason.
“He has a mission, which becomes clear to him over the course of the season,” said the producer. “He’s going to have a huge impact on Bruce’s life and Selina’s life as well.”
“Gotham” season 3 premieres Monday, Sept. 19 at 8 p.m. ET on FOX.
