As 2017 comes to a close, Google looks back at some of the people and topics that captured the attention of internet users by releasing the top searches of the year.

The top searches in the United States reveal that this year’s tragedies, as well as troubled personalities, were on top of people’s minds, and were often in their search boxes.

The most-searched subject of 2017 was the devastating Hurricane Irma that hit the Caribbean islands and Florida in September. The hurricane was one of the most powerful Atlantic storms in recorded history. The storm led to the deaths of over a hundred people and left more than $60 billion worth of damages.

Disgraced television host Matt Lauer was the second most searched topic in the United States for 2017. The host of the “Today” show was fired by NBC following allegations of inappropriate sexual behavior.

Lauer is one of the most famous personalities to be included in the string of sexual harassment allegations. More people are now getting the courage to speak up and expose the improper sexual behavior of powerful men — a lifestyle which has pervaded Hollywood for decades.

The third in the list of most popular search topics is Tom Petty. The musician’s unexpected death at the age of 66 broke the hearts of many. He suffered a cardiac arrest while at his home in California.

The Super Bowl comes next on the list as the exciting match between the New England Patriots and Atlanta Falcons set the stage for the greatest comeback in Super Bowl history. Down by 25 points in the second half, the Patriots mounted a comeback and went on to become Super Bowl champions once more.

Fifth on the list is the tragic Las Vegas shooting in October. In what has become the deadliest mass shooting in the country’s modern history, a lone gunman opened fire on a music festival crowd, killing 58 people and injuring over 500 others.

Other topics that made it to the top 10 include the fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Connor McGregor, the solar eclipse in August, Hurricane Harvey, Aaron Hernandez and the fidget spinner.
