Last year, Google launched two Nexus smartphones side by side, the Nexus 5X and 6P. This year, rumors about two new Nexus phones have started coming up as various leaks have made the rounds online. According to reports, the dubbed Nexus M1 and Nexus S1 will allegedly be called Nexus Marlin and Nexus Sailfish.
According to BGR, the HTC-made handsets are expected to be faster than this year’s Android flagships. Both devices are also said to have the same internal configuration, meaning that even if the Marlin and Sailfish are smaller than recent offerings, the Nexus phones won’t be inferior when it comes to overall performance.
As for which smartphone will have the distinction of being called Google’s flagship phone of 2016, it was said that the Marlin and Sailfish will share the title this year. When the Nexus 5X and 6P were launched in 2015, the Nexus 6P was thought to be the flagship device as it had a better design and specs. The Nexus 6P had an aluminum body, more color options, a bigger and better display, and a more superior chip set and internal storage.
BGR reports that the Marlin and Sailfish will have the same specs, which is what Apple does when it releases its iPhones. In recent years, the Cupertino-based company would usually release a flagship phone coupled with a supersized version of the handset, and Google appears to be taking a leaf out of Apple’s playbook with this strategy.
Both phones are expected to surpass other smartphones in the market, as the Nexus Sailfish will reportedly have a 5-inch Full HD AMOLED screen, 64-bit 2 GHz quad-core processor, 4 GB of random access memory (RAM), 32 GB internal storage, a 12-megapixel main camera and 8-megapixel front shooter, Bluetooth 4.2, rear fingerprint reader, USB-C port, one speaker on the bottom, and a headphone jack on top.
Meanwhile, Android Police reports that the Nexus Marlin will have a 5.5-inch AMOLED display, quad-core Qualcomm processor, 4 GB of RAM, storage options of 32 GB and 128 GB, a 12-megapixel rear camera and an 8-megapixel front camera, Bluetooth 4.2, rear-mounted fingerprint scanner, a USB-C port, and bottom-firing speakers.
It was speculated that the Google Nexus Sailfish and Marlin will make its debut at around the same time when the iPhone 7 will be released September 2016. Both devices are expected to go on sale the next month.
