With the upcoming sixth season of HBO’s “Game of Thrones” this spring, fans have been well along wondering what will happen once the cable channel have aired all the episodes even though George R. R. Martin’s “Winds of Winter” is yet to be finished.
The 10-episode-per-year setup has already been short as it is for a show as popular and intriguing as “Game of Thrones.” Although fans would love to stretch out the wait time and possibly the lives of their favorite characters, it would just be pure agony if they would have to wait for what comes next for more than a year after season 6 airs.
In April, Martin already expressed that he is currently working on the book which will follow his 2011’s “A Song of Fire and Ice.” In a report by Entertainment Weekly, he even teased on a shocking direction the story might turn not that it has lacked any “shocking” factors so far.
“This is going to drive your readers crazy, but I love it. I’m still weighing whether to go that direction or not. It’s a great twist. It’s easy to do things that are shocking or unexpected, but they have to grow out of characters. They have to grow out of situations. Otherwise, it’s just being shocking for being shocking. But this is something that seems very organic and natural, and I could see how it would happen. And with the various three, four characters involved… it all makes sense. But it’s nothing I’ve ever thought of before. And it’s nothing they can do in the show, because the show has alreadyon this particular charactermade a couple decisions that will preclude it, where in my case I have not made those decisions,” the 64-year-old bestselling author quipped.
Fortunately, although there is still no official word on when the “Winds of Winter” will come out, fans of “Game of Thrones” have already learned that Martin is the kind of author who puts in hints here and there. On his personal blog, he promoted his cameo in Syfy’s “Z Nation” via a clip showing Martin signing books titled “A Promise of Spring.” This didn’t go unnoticed and fans were quick to assume that Martin is actually hinting that a new book will drop sometime next spring.
Meanwhile, fans can check out the newly released trailer for “Game of Thrones” season 6 here.
