The upcoming film adaptation of Scott Cawthon’s “Five Nights at Freddy’s” game series will have a separate but definitely canon storyline when it hits theaters.

This was confirmed by none other than Gil Kenan, who was reported by Deadline on Tuesday to have signed on to helm the thriller adaptation.

According to the website Jobs & Hire, Kenan responded to a fan question on Twitter enquiring as to whether the film will have a separate storyline that will still connect to the storyline established by the four “Five Nights at Freddy’s” games.

The director responded in the affirmative, the website reports.

Kenan also confirmed on Twitter that the movie will eschew the use of computer-generated imagery (CGI) and will instead rely on practical effects to bring to life the dreaded four animatronics of Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria.

According to VG24/7, the 38-year-old director also said that the movie will be heavily based on the lore surrounding Cawthon’s deceptively simple but terrifying quadrilogy of games. Thus, it will present a story that was not seen in any of the games.

“The mythology runs deep, and is truly scary,” he said in the VG24/7 article.”The lore of the game is the movie’s fuel.”

Kenan also hinted that there might be multiple locations for the movie, as opposed to the single settings featured in each of the FNAF games, the article said.

Five Nights at Freddy’s is a survival horror series in which a player in the role of night-shift security guard has to fend off attacks by four animatronics until 6 AM arrives.

Five Nights at Freddy’s 4, rumored to be the “final chapter” of Cawthon’s popular series, received an early release last month even though it was earlier scheduled to come out on August 8, the anniversary of the first FNAF game.

According to Design & Trend, despite being reported as the final chapter, the game answered only about half of the questions regarding the series’ lore. The publication then theorized that the upcoming Halloween DLC might provide the answers that FNAF fans are looking for as they try to understand the full story behind the games.
