The second half of “Empire” season 3 is primarily going to be about Lucious (Terrence Howard) and Cookie (Taraji P. Henson), says the showrunner.
During her recent talk with The Hollywood Reporter, showrunner Ilene Chaiken confirmed that the following episodes of the musical drama series will revolve around the rivalry of the ex-couple. The battle will be fueled by their three sons: Andre (Trai Byers), Hakeem (Bryshere Y. Gray), and Jamal (Jussie Smollett).
Chaiken hinted that Jamal will play a big part in saving his family from his father’s dark influence.
“They’re fighting this battle in the arena of music, but it contains all of the wishes and drives that each of those men have,” she stated.
While Hakeem is off “figuring out what his relationship is to his daughter and how to claim it,” Andre is determined to escalate his evil plan against his father with the help of his new allies, Shyne (Xzibit) and Nessa (Sierra A. McClain).
As noted in the previous episodes, the eldest son was planning to kill his father, but it was interrupted by his girlfriend’s catfight. He then makes a deal with Shyne.
“His moves will continue to escalate especially now that we know that he has an endgame, and that endgame is something that he sincerely intends to carry through,” Chaiken teased.
Anika (Grace Gealey) is back as the head of A&R at Empire Entertainment through Lucious’ re-appointment. This made Cookie furious, and she confronted her ex-spouse. However, their fight ended with a kiss.
“In that moment, Lucious knows that Cookie loves him and will never be able to let him go,” said the executive producer.
As seen in the 11th episode, Cookie’s mind is full of flashbacks of her and her then-husband. She recalled how they all started and how much she believed in her spouse’s music passion that eventually turned into an empire.
Furthermore, Chaiken described the upcoming season finale as “surprising and breathtaking,” and she affirmed that they are working on a spinoff.
The next episode of “Empire” is scheduled to air on Apr. 5 on Fox.
