Showrunner Ilen Chaiken revealed that season 3 of Fox’s hit hip-hop soap opera “Empire” will be a battle of dark versus light as the Lyon family tries to move forward from their struggles and scandals.
In an interview with TVLine, Chaiken shared, “Who are the Lyons and how will they continue to define themselves going forward? Can they ever change? Is Lucious [Terrence Howard] the dark lord, pulling them all in the other direction? And really, where does Tariq [Morroco Omari] fit in with all of this? I would venture that if Tariq really is Lucious’ half-brother, there probably isn’t a good one and a bad one.”
The executive producer further teased that Cookie’s (Taraji P. Henson) decision to walk away from Lucious over their sham marriage may come as a favor to Anika (Grace Gealey). “The family is together, the company is together, and Lucious and Cookie will be in one another’s faces and lives but her [being finished with Lucious] is going to color everything,” she continued.
Moreover, aside from all the shocking moments during the sophomore’s finale, reports claim that Freda Gatz (Bre-Z) will be returning to the narrative to show how her close friendship with Jamal Lyon (Jussie Smollett) will evolve after what transpired between them.
Viewers may remember that the young rapper and Jamal started out as good friends. The former ended up in prison after she attempted to kill Lucious when she found out that it was him who killed her father. Instead of successfully murdering him, Jamal took the bullet to save Lucious.
The follow-up narrative is also expected to feature who fell down from the balcony when Andre (Trai Byers) witnessed Anika and Rhonda (Kaitlin Doubleday) fighting and what will happen between Jamal and Derek/D-Major (Tobias Truvillion). Jamal and the mega producer instantly had a chemistry when they spent more time together, but the latter seemed to have unresolved issues regarding his sexuality. He accused Jamal of making advances at him when Lucious walked in on them.
Season 3 of “Empire” is slated to premiere sometime in fall.
