'Elementary' season 5 release date news, spoilers: 100th episode to tackle an apocalyptic threat; Jamie Moriarty to return?

The sky is falling in “Elementary’s” 100th episode special, and who should come to help save the day but Sherlock Holmes’ (Jonny Lee Miller) old friend from his boarding school days.

The episode titled, “Henny Penny The Sky Is Falling,” scheduled to air on Oct. 30, will see Sherlock solve the case of a man who got killed for his passion for Earth-killer asteroids. This man is described as someone who’s determined to discover more efficient ways of identifying and diverting asteroids big enough to pose a threat to Earth.

Owain Yeoman, who was previously known as Wayne Rigsby on “The Mentalist,” will portray Sherlock’s boarding school classmate who comes to help him find this man’s killer and unravel the deeper mysteries behind his death that could potentially lead them all the way to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

According to TVLine, executive producer Robert Doherty described Yeoman’s role as “fun and very colorful.” No other detail about the character has been revealed.

Doherty has also hinted the possible return of a familiar character, which is rumored to be either Sherlock’s nemesis, Jamie Moriarty (Natalie Dormer), or Sherlock’s brother Mycroft Holmes (Rhys Ifans).

Fans believe that since Dormer is no longer tied to the hit HBO series “Game of Thrones,” where she played Margaery Tyrell, the actress will now have more time to play Jamie in a recurring role in the upcoming season of “Elementary.”

Doherty has also expressed interest in reuniting the Holmes family, possibly bringing Mycroft back as a recurring character to further explore the complexities of his past with Dr. Joan Watson (Lucy Liu).

Meanwhile, another character from the original source material joins “Elementary” season 5. Shinwell Johnson appeared in the “Sherlock Holmes” installment “The Illustrious Client,” which was written by Arthur Conan Doyle. He was Watson’s old patient, and was very instrumental in solving Sherlock’s case at the time.

In “Elementary” season 5, Shinwell will be played by Nelsan Ellis from “True Blood,” who has signed on to appear in at least three episodes. Shinwell’s contemporary version will be approached for help by Joan who knew him back from when she was still a surgeon. Shinwell is described as someone who is trying to pull his life back together after being imprisoned for drug charges.

“Elementary” will return to CBS for its fifth season on Sunday, Oct. 2, at 10 p.m. EDT.
