Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson reveals his personal struggles and the lessons he got from them in “Oprah Masterclass.” In a series of clips, he talks about his family, life-changing experiences, and his battle with depression.
In one clip, Johnson gets emotional as he talks about his then 13-year-old daughter, Simone. He tells of a time when he asked his daughter what she loved most about their relationship to which she answered “I trust you” and “We have a very special bond.” Recalling this particular scene in his life brings The Rock to tears.
He remembers how he was unstable when he was his daughter’s age and how he had always wanted to be a great father. He shares that having Simone made him realize that being a father is the greatest job he had ever had and that as her father, he had to lead life with love.
“I’ve realized the most important thing I can do with my daughter is lead our lives with love,” says The Rock. “Not success. Not fame. Not anything else. But I’m always here for you. I love you.”
Johnson also talks about depression and advises those who suffer from it to open up to someone about what they’re going through and realize that many people have depression and that they’re not alone.
“I wish I had someone at that time who could just pull me aside and [say], ‘Hey, it’s gonna be OK. It’ll be OK.'” he says. “Hold on to that fundamental quality of faith. Have faith that on the other side of your pain is something good.”
In addition, he talks about his girlfriend, soon-to-be-mom Lauren Hasian, and how he is thankful to be able to walk through life with her. He also talks about how he saved his mom and realized life is precious and can be taken away in an instant. He also thanks his high school coach for changing the direction of his life.
“Oprah Masterclass,” now on its fifth season, also had Ellen DeGeneres, Smokey Robinson, and Robert Duvall appear on the show before The Rock. Vocalist Patti Labelle will be in “Oprah Masterclass” next on Sunday, Nov. 22.
