Earlier this year, “Daredevil” fans celebrated the season 3 renewal of the Netflix series, as the new season is expected to resolve the cliffhangers from the season 2 finale. However, it looks like viewers are in for a long wait as the Charlie Cox starrer won’t be returning until 2018, at the earliest.
According to Comicbook.com, the possible delay is based on the supposed production schedule which Marvel Television and Netflix have laid out. While the second season was released less than a year after the season 1 finale, season 3 could be delayed as Cox will be starring alongside other Marvel heroes in Netflix’s “The Defenders.” The series will see Daredevil, Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), Luke Cage (Mike Colter), and Iron Fist (Finn Jones) fighting evil in New York City. The new show, which will begin filming later this year, will serve as a precursor to “Daredevil” season 3.
While some may think that the show’s delay might result to reduced viewership, the website notes that the “Daredevil” series continues to be popular among fans, especially those who favor none of the more popular characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. There is also the fact that the series has kept viewers riveted by its superb plotlines, as seen in the shocking season 2 finale.
In the last scenes of the episode, Matt Murdock (Cox) revealed his alter ego to his ex, Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll). The finale also revealed that the evil organization, the Hand, dug up Elektra’s (lodie Yung) body from the cemetery Matt and Stick (Scott Glenn) had just buried her in. Later, the Hand put her corpse into the stone coffin which they have been guarding all season. When the show returns, it is expected that Karen’s reaction to Matt’s confession will be revealed, as fans are also waiting to see what happens to Elektra now that her body is with the Hand.
Co-showrunner Doug Petrie told The Hollywood Reporter that when the show returns, fans will find out that the Hand is up to no good after what they did to Elektra’s body.
“The clues can be found in the canon and in the comics, but we do hope that our viewers feel we’re not done telling this story yet,” said Petrie.
Netflix has yet to announce an official season 3 premiere date for “Daredevil.”
