Is the next season of “Dancing With the Stars” about to get some Olympians on the dance floor? Lately there are rumors claiming that Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps, as well as gold-winning gymnast Simone Biles might be joining season 23 of the ABC show.
Phelps, who is the most decorated Olympian in the history of the games, has three gold medals to date at the Rio Olympics, not counting the others that he won at previous games. A Hollywoodlife source said that producers are wooing the swimmer to join the new season of the dance competition show.
“Michael has been asked before [to do ‘DWTS’] and he was recently asked [to compete in] the upcoming season,” said the insider. “And though he has considered it, he doesn’t want to do it; he wants his legacy to be in the pool and not on the dance floor.”
Meanwhile, Us Weekly reports that Biles is being encouraged by gymnastics teammate Aly Raisman to join the next season of DWTS. Raisman competed on the show back in 2013.
In a piece on Biles (via Pure DWTS), Us Weekly says that Raisman is “urging” the 19-year-old to join season 23 of the show. It appears that Biles was asked whether she plans to join the competition, and she replied, “I can’t dance, but that’s the whole point.”
“DWTS” has a history of featuring athletes in the show, and some of them have gone on to win the Mirror Ball Trophy. Olympic skaters Apollo Ono and Kristi Yamaguchi respectively won the fourth and sixth season of the show, while Olympic ice dancer Meryl Davis won in season 18. However, there were some athletes who did not do so well, as Olympic bobsledder Lolo Jones was the first one to be eliminated in season 19.
As for returning pro dancers, it is expected that Val Chmerkovskiy and Allison Holker will be back for season 23. Peta Murgatroyd is currently pregnant and is expected to be out for the season. Derek Hough is also claimed to be out as he is working on other projects.
Season 23 of “Dancing With the Stars” is slated to premiere later this year on ABC.
