The highly acclaimed family drama “This Is Us” has wrapped up its second season with the much-anticipated wedding of Kate (Chrissy Metz) and Toby (Chris Sulivan), which Metz described as a completely new beginning for her character.

The actress described the wedding as “unconventional, emotional, and unexpected,” while drawing comparisons to some of the character’s qualities. She also said that despite the end of the season, “the finale is a completely new start for Kate.”

Throughout the two seasons of “This Is Us,” the character of Kate has weathered personal tragedy, body issues, and self-doubt. Furthermore, the on-screen couple’s road to the altar has not been smooth either. They have endured some rocky patches, including Kate’s sensitive pregnancy that ultimately resulted in them losing their unborn baby.

“It’s a really joyous finale in a season marked by a lot of sadness and tragedy,” said “This Is Us” executive producer Isaac Aptaker. “It’s about a lot of characters looking forward and has an incredible amount of uplift to it.”

Fans will remember that season two was when the series showed the events that led to the tragic death of the Pearson patriarch, Jack (Milo Ventimiglia).

During the wedding, Metz wore a custom, handmade couture wedding gown created by the show’s costume designer Hala Bahmet. “I explored several different design ideas and have a variety of sketches,” said Bahmet. “Because the wedding was outdoors I wanted elements of nature represented in the design of the dress and a natural cascading bouquet.”

When filming the finale episode, Metz shared via social media that she was wearing a pale blue manicure featuring the initial of her character’s on-screen father, Jack. “Honoring the beautiful relationship Jack and Kate always had, I decided to have his initials close to my heart,” wrote Metz, posting photos of her pinkies, one with a gold “J,” and another with a “P.”
