Marina Squerciati gives her character, Officer Burgess, some rest in the “Chicago P.D.” due to a real-life situation.
As noted in the 19th episode of the police drama series, Burgess woke up without her sister, Nicole (guest star Jules Willcox). It turned out that the latter went for a night out with some friends.
After arriving at the police department, Burgess received a call from Nicole, who is asking for help. They found her inside a train station, and she told them that some people drugged and sexually assaulted her.
The Intelligence Unit buckled down to investigate what happened to Burgess’ sister. They learned that Nicole’s friend was missing and was found dead later on. Lindsay (Sophia Bush) and Burgess went undercover to draw out the perpetrators. And when one of the suspects tried to assault the Burgess, the squad appeared to arrest them.
Subsequently, Burgess asked for a temporary leave to take care of her sister and niece.
In her recent talk with Entertainment Weekly, Squerciati revealed that she is pregnant. She also mentioned that the writers could not associate her current condition to the storyline.
“It was a lot of back and forth and ultimately, when they decided not to write it in, you needed a plausible reason why Burgess would leave for awhile,” the 32-year-old actress said. “I think this was really a beautiful way for Burgess to leave because it’s kind of on her own terms, but also not on her own terms,” she went on to say.
She confirmed that the latest episode was her last appearance in the fourth season, which has four more episodes go to prior to the finale.
“I’m not really sure how the other characters will deal with my leaving once I’m gone, but hopefully, they all take a while to bounce back,” Squerciati stated.
As of this writing, NBC has not renewed the series for a fifth season. If NBC renews it, Squerciati hopes to see her character doing something that is never before seen. She also says she wants to see more of Burgess’ romantic relationship with fellow detective Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger).
The next episode of “Chicago P.D.” will air on April 26 on NBC.
