“Castle” enters the last stretch of what could be its last season with a shocker whether or not the show gets renewed for season 9, Stana Katic will no longer be reprising her role as Kate Beckett.
“Kate Beckett has been a beloved character on our hit series ‘Castle’ for the past 8 years. We are grateful for Stana Katic’s talent and dedication to the series and we hope to continue our relationship,” ABC said in an official statement.
Only days prior to Katic’s exit, “Castle” showrunners Terence Paul Winter and Alexi Hawley even expressed their eagerness to come back “all hands on deck” in an interview with TV Line. However, they also admitted that everybody needs to ink deals on their own to make it possible.
The police procedural has been plagued with waning viewership ratings and backlash from fans in terms of storytelling over the season. These factors may be a huge part in ABC’s indecisiveness to order another serving of the series. Katic’s departure, on the other hand, is chalked up to budgetary reasons, Collider reported.
Aside from Katic, Tamala Jones is also slated to end her run in the show. Jones plays Dr. Lanie Parish, a medical examiner and close friend to Beckett.
The other lead star of the show, Nathan Fillion (Richard Castle), has yet to renew his contract on “Castle.” However, the 45-year-old actor released a statement about his co-star and on-screen wife leaving the series.
“Stana has been my partner all this time, and I thank her for creating the character of Beckett who will live on for all of us as one of the greatest police officers on television. I wish her well, and have no doubt she will succeed in everything she pursues. She will be missed,” he continued.
As of now, nothing yet is set in stone in terms of “Castle” past season 8. The show is slated to air its remaining 4 episodes for the season. The next one titled “Dead Again” will see the married couple tackling a case about a city inspector surviving poisoning twice.
“Castle” season 8 airs Monday nights, 10 P.M.. EST on ABC.
