Canelo Alvarez vs Gennady Golovkin fight news: Promoter Oscar De La Hoya eager to make fight finally happen

Fresh from his impressive knockout win against Amir Khan, Canelo Alvarez now shifts his attention to Gennady Golovkin as his possible next opponent.

“I’m willing to make [Golovkin] an offer,” Alvarez told ESPN. “I’d be happy to not only fight him but also to beat him. If the fight happens, I’m happy to fight him. It’s no problem.”

As expected by a lot of industry people, Alvarez emerged as the winner during his last fight against Khan. The head-to-head was the boxer’s first attempt to defend his WBC, The Ring, and lineal middleweight titles. Alvarez gave an astounding performance as he was able to put the British boxer away by knocking him out in the sixth round.

With the Mexican seemingly open to finally meeting Golovkin inside the ring, Golden Boy Promotions head Oscar De La Hoya expressed his willingness to push it forward and make the bout happen.

“If that’s the fight Canelo wants, I will get some well-deserved rest and when I wake up start making some phone calls. I’ve always said come May 8 we will start negotiating with Golovkin’s people,” De Lay Hoya told press people during the Alvarez-Khan post-fight press conference.

Earlier this year, the pro-boxer already opened up about the supposed fight saying that it will happen sooner than later. But since Alvarez has had the Cinco de Mayo title defense, the buzz turned to the upcoming match instead of talks regarding Golovkin.

“Those negotiations will happen behind closed doors, and when we come to an agreement, we will let everyone know,” De La Hoya said at the post-fight news conference. “That’s the fight to make. [Sunday] I will make the call. I will start negotiating, and I really hope we can make an agreement.

Golovkin, on the other hand, has long sent an invitation for Alvarez and throwing a couple of shades to his match up with Khan. At one point, he even called it a “business fight” referring to the supposed lopsided head-to-head. Golovkin is the mandatory challenger of the Canelo-Khan bout as he is the current holder of WBC’s interim title but has long been set on fighting Alvarez.

Fans would have to wait a couple more on the development of the supposed fight especially since Alvarez has just won his latest fight.
