HBO has released the first trailer for its upcoming new show titled “Big Little Lies.” The eight-episode limited series is made up of a powerhouse cast which includes Oscar winners Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon, as well as “Divergent” star Shailene Woodley.
The teaser opens with idyllic shots of the ocean and family life, revealing that the three actresses’ characters are all mothers. Later, it appears that the women have gotten together and are looking down with shock at something or someone.
The series is an adaptation of the 2014 novel of the same title written by Liane Moriarty. The show’s IMDb page reveals that Kidman will be playing Celeste Wright, Witherspoon will play Madeline Martha Mackenzie, while Woodley will portray Jane Chapman.
In the book, the three women strike up a friendship after meeting each other for the first time on their kids’ first day of kindergarten. All of them have issues to deal with as Madeline is struggling with the fact that her daughter is growing closer to her ex’s new wife, Bonnie. Meanwhile, Celeste is being abused by her husband, Perry, while Jane is trying to find her son’s father, whom she had a one-night stand with.
In the series, Bonnie will be played by Woodley’s “Divergent” co-star Zo Kravitz, while “True Blood” star Alexander Skarsgrd will play Perry. The show also stars Laura Dern as Renata Klein, and Adam Scott as Ed Mackenzie.
If the series stays true to its source material, then viewers can expect the main characters to band together after witnessing a shocking death, and they will be staying mum about it to protect those who are involved. Two of the women will also find that they have something in common, and one will go public and speak up about her abuse.
“Big Little Lies” premieres in 2017. A specific date has yet to be announced by HBO.
