'Battlefield 1' release date: WWI, weapons, zeppelins

DICE Studios’ newest shooter action “Battlefield 1” is almost upon gamers. Set during World War I, the new game will bring players a gaming experience unlike any other games in the franchise.

In a recent interview with GameSpot, DICE Design Director Lars Gustavsson said that having the game set during World War I allowed them to utilize some of the important milestones in history. It was during that time period when the world first saw massive battleships and war tanks.

These elements and more are what DICE used in the game. However, they cannot reveal the full details yet.

“We have areas that we are starting to talk about, and there’s areas that we’re going to talk about later,” Gustavsson shared. “But just like you see in the trailer, there’s a plenitude of vehicle types. You saw the battleship in the trailer, you saw a lot of interesting stuff, so there will definitely be new and cool gameplay in there.”

One new gameplay element that is being talked about is the use of the zeppelins. To recall, the zeppelins are humongous sky vessels that were first introduced before the First World War broke out. However, they were forgotten shortly after the war ended. Gustavsson said that the zeppelins and other new gameplay elements will be discussed deeper on a later date.

Also, the game’s lead designer Danny Berlin discussed the reason why the game is titled with the number “1.” If anything, Berlin denied the rumors that the reason for this is the setting of the game. As it turned out, it was a little more than that, including bringing in something new yet familiar.

“We’re calling it ‘Battlefield 1’ for a couple reasons,” he said. “First off, we’ve never had a ‘Battlefield 1’ before. We started with ‘Battlefield 1942,’ and went from there. But in the same way, we’re also titling it this way because we’re going back to our roots. We’re bringing back that ‘Battlefield’ flavor, with sandbox maps and wide open places for you to play. We’re seeing how we can take our roots and make them something new again in 2016.”

Berlin also said that multiplayer options are now wider than ever compared to previous Battlefield” games.

“Battlefield 1” will be released on Oct. 21 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows PC.
