The new big villain for the upcoming fifth season of the hit series on The CW, “Arrow,” will reportedly be greatly influenced by the character of Idris Elba on the HBO series “The Wire.”
According to a report by TVLine, it appears that the executive producers and the writers of “Arrow” are big fans of the HBO TV series “The Wire,” as the upcoming big bad of the show’s fifth will allegedly be modelled after the character of Stinger Bell, played in the HBO series by Elba.
Following the elimination of the “mystical” and “magical” villain Damien Darhk, it appears that the world of “Arrow” will tone down a little in terms of being ambitious in scope and will return to being a series grounded in reality, like how it was in its first two seasons.
The new villain, as of now, is only known by the name “Anton Church.” So far, the name does not match any of the existing characters in the world of DC Comics, which raises speculations that it might only be a codename for the season’s main villain. Church was described as “a ruthless crime lord who sets out to fill the sizable void left by Damien Darhk and H.I.V.E.” He is an “apex predator” and someone who cuts his way through the shadows and takes down the biggest threats first.
Based on the flashbacks that will be seen in the next season, which will expectedly fill the gap of what happened to Oliver prior to his return to his home city after five years of being marooned, executive producer Wendy Mericle teased that the questions about Oliver’s past might soon be answered.
“It’s a very good possibility that we’ll finally find out how he got that Bratva tattoo and how he learned to speak Russian,” Mericle said in a separate interview. “When Oliver says, ‘No one can know my secret’ and he kills that guy in the pilot, we’re going to get some insight into that.”
“Arrow” will return to The CW this fall.
