88th Academy Awards news: 'The Revenant' tops list with 12 Oscar nominations

“The Revenant” tops the list of nominees for the 88th Academy Awards to be held Feb. 28 at Hollywood’s Dolby Theater.

The survival epic received a total of 12 Oscar nominations, followed by “Mad Max: Fury Road” with 10, “The Martian” with seven, and “Bridge of Spies,” “Carol,” and “Spotlight” with six nods each.

“The Revenant” director and 2015 Academy winner Alejandro Irritu is nominated for Achievement in Directing, against Adam McKay for “The Big Short,” George Miller for “Mad Max: Fury Road,” Lenny Abrahamson for “Room,” and Tom McCarthy for “Spotlight.”

2015’s best performance by an actor in a leading role winner Eddie Redmayne is once again up for the award for “The Danish Girl” along with Leonardo DiCaprio, whose work in “The Revenant” earned him his fifth nomination. Also nominated for the award are Michael Fassbender for “Steve Jobs,” Matt Damon for “The Martian,” and Bryan Cranston for “Trumbo.” 

Two-time Academy winner Cate Blanchett also received another nod for best performance by an actress in a leading role for “Carol,” competing against 2013 winner Jennifer Lawrence for “Joy,” Brie Larson for “Room,” Charlotte Rampling for “45 years,” and Saoirse Ronan for “Brooklyn.”

2009 Academy Best Actress and 2016 Golden Globe winner Kate Winslet is nominated for best performance by an actress in a supporting role for her role in “Steve Jobs,” along with Jennifer Jason Leigh for “The Hateful Eight,” Rooney Mara for “Carol,” Rachel McAdams for “Spotlight,” and Alicia Vikander for “The Danish Girl.”

2011 Academy winner Christian Bale is once again up for best performance by an actor in a supporting role for “The Big Short,” and faces competition against Sylvester Stallone, whose work in the “Creed” paved the way for his second Oscar nomination, Tom Hardy for “The Revenant,” Mark Ruffalo for “Spotlight,” and Mark Rylance for “Bridge of Spies.”

Nominated for best motion picture of the year are: “The Big Short,” “Bridge of Spies,” “Brooklyn, “Mad Max: Fury Road,” “The Martian,” “The Revenant,” “Room,” and “Spotlight.”

The 88th Academy Awards will be hosted by actor Chris Rock.
